چکیده

The structural characteristics of corn stalks hemicelluloses during the active oxygen cooking process as a pretreatment of biomass conversion were investigated in this work. The hemicelluloses obtained from the corn stalks, pulp, and yellow liquor were evaluated by high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and 1 H13 C 2D hetero-nuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC) spectroscopy. Based on the sugar and GPC analysis, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy, it could be concluded that the hemicelluloses were composed of backbones of (1→4)-β-D-xylopyranose substituted α-L-arabinofuranose and 4-O-methyl-α-D-glucuronic acid. During the cooking process, the hemicelluloses with more side chains were removed from raw material. The backbones were significantly damaged as well. Additionally, the ester linkages in the raw material were completely broken after the cooking.

Steam explosion distinctively enhances biomass enzymatic saccharification of cotton stalks by largely reducing cellulose polymerization degree in G. barbadense and G. hirsutum.

In this study, steam explosion pretreatment was performed in cotton stalks, leading to 5-6 folds enhancements on biomass enzymatic saccharification distinctive in Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum species. Sequential 1% H2SO4 pretreatment could further increase biomass digestibility of the steam-exploded stalks, and also cause the highest sugar-ethanol conversion rates probably by rel...

Influence of Steam Pressure on the Physico- Chemical Properties of Degraded Hemicelluloses Obtained from Steam-exploded Lespedeza Stalks

Steam explosion pretreatment was used to release hemicelluloses from the stalks of Lespedeza crytobotrya, a potential woody biomass crop. Hemicelluloses from Lespedeza crytobotrya subjected to five different pretreatment severities were extracted with 60% aqueous ethanol solution containing 1% NaOH, characterized by component analysis, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FT-IR, NMR spectroscop...

Hydrolysis of Sorghum (Broomcorn) in Diluted Hydrochloric Acid

Effective conversion of lignocellulosic material as renewable energy source has significant reflection on economic and environmental impact. Diluted acid hydrolysis at optimal condition was used to liberate fermentable sugar. The sorghum stalks, the alkali pretreatment of biomass and hydrolysis in diluted hydrochloric acid were investigated. The hydrolysis reaction was carried out in a 5L react...

Fungal Pretreatment of Corn Stover Fractions for Ethanol Production

Ethanol produced from biomass, such as corn grain or sugar cane, is a renewable fuel that helps lessen dependence on petroleum-based fossil fuels. Currently, the majority of ethanol production in the United States utilizes corn grain, which supplied about 14 billion gallons of ethanol to the market in 2012. In the near future, corn supplies for ethanol are expected to be limited due to concerns...

Enzymatic Digestibility of Corn Stover Fractions in Response to Fungal Pretreatment

Corn stover fractions (leaves, cobs, and stalks) were studied for enzymatic digestibility after pretreatment with a white rot fungus, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. Among the three fractions, leaves had the least recalcitrance to fungal pretreatment and the lignin degradation reached 45% after 30 days of pretreatment. The lignin degradation of stalks and cobs was similar but was significantly low...
